Below is Phillip Hoang's blog on his experience and knowledge gained from 101576 Primary PDHPE in Semester 2.
PDH Theory- Week 1
Today was the first PDH theory tutorial, it was the first time meeting my fellow classmates and everyone was very friendly. The tutorial introduced us to the main concepts of the K-6 PDHPE Syllabus explaining the specific stages of learning, the five main skills, the strands and outcomes of PDHPE. The tutorial helped me understand where everything was, as looking through the syllabus for the first time was quite daunting and overwhelming. We were grouped together using a treasure hunt worksheet to locate the specific areas in the syllabus, and the tutor explained what these specific areas and concepts meant. Additionally, we brainstormed what we thought PDHPE was about from our prior knowledge. It was good to see many aspects which I had overlooked, where PDHPE was more than just sports and health, it went further into depth with such things as; problem solving, bullying, drug use, environmental awareness, road and personal safety. This tutorial gave me a greater understanding of the PDHPE unit and “what to expect” when it comes to teaching primary school students the wide range of subject matter for different stages.

PE Practical- Week 1
Today was the first PE tutorial and it was a breath of fresh air from my other university studies. The tutorial focused on the basics of PE, where we started off with some warm up games to get ourselves stretched and warmed up. At first it was quite tiring because I have been inactive for quite some time since high school. After the 20 minutes of warm up, I didn’t realise how much we had moved about. I learnt that warm up is not just about letting students run around an oval 5 times, instead by using a lot of miniature warm up games with short rest breaks, allows the students to be active and moving, without becoming bored from something mundane as jogging a few laps. Next, I found that it was not easy to teach school children locomotor and manipulative skills that we may take for granted, such as throwing a ball or hopping, and that some students may find difficulty in these tasks, we were to demonstrate patience and understanding. It was a fun active tutorial lesson, and opened my eyes about PE , and that it was not just about sport.
